Cabbagetown is a historic intown Atlanta neighborhood that was once home to the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill. The neighborhood that stands today was built as the surrounding mill town, and was home to many who worked in the mill and factory. Cabbagetown suffered a great decline when the mill was closed in the 70s until the mid 90s, when this area began to benefit from redevelopment and Atlantans moving back into intown neighborhoods.
Cabbagetown is a district of Atlanta, located east of Downtown, bordered by the Oakland Cemetery, Boulevard and Pearl Streets, Memorial Drive, and the Georgia Railroad tracks. In relation to other intown neighborhoods Cabbagetown is south of Inman Park, north of Grant Park, and west of Reynoldstown. The community is a six block area of narrow, short streets and many intersections, which is said to be typical of old mill towns. The area is made up primarily of houses, lofts, and small commercial pockets of restaurants and small businesses.
Houses on these streets tend to be on small lots, giving this neighborhood a very cozy and intimate feel. Most of the houses in Cabbagetown are colorful bungalows and craftsman styles with some Victorian and Romanesque detailing. The houses range in size from small shotguns to mid-sized two story homes. There are also a significant amount of lofts available in Cabbagetown due to the conversion of the old mill into the Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts, which is the nation’s largest residential loft community.
